How to watch Algerian boxer Imane Khelif in women’s 66kg Olympic semifinals
Imane Khelif, the boxer from Algeria whose Olympics have been mired in controversy, will step into the ring today for the women’s 66kg semifinal, and no matter the result, she’ll be leaving Paris with a medal.
Khelif made headlines during the first round of the boxing championship when her opponent quit 46 seconds into the match and her gender was called into question, leading to a discovery that the International Boxing Association (IBA) had once disqualified her for failing a gender eligibility test.
It’s not Khelif’s first Olympics competing in women’s boxing because the athlete is and has always been a woman.
“The Algerian boxer was born female, was registered female, lived her life as a female, boxed as a female, has a female passport,” IOC spokesperson Mark Adams said.
The President of the IOC Thomas Bach has also weighed in, stating that the “hate speech” geared toward Khelif and fellow boxer Lin Yu-Ting, who is in a similar position, is “totally unacceptable.”
Today, Khelif will face Thailand’s Janjaem Suwannapheng in the semifinals of the women’s 66kg boxing competition. Since Olympic boxing doesn’t feature a bronze medal bout, the loser of today’s match will take home the bronze, while the winner goes on to face the second semifinal’s winner. The boxing matches are streaming exclusively on Peacock.
