Christian McCaffrey calls Brandon Aiyuk ‘former teammate’ as 49ers trade feels imminent
Christian McCaffrey had a slip of the tongue in an interview during training camp Tuesday and now it seems all but certain that Brandon Aiyuk has played his last snap as a 49er.
McCaffrey was asked a question about the embattled star receiver who has been the focus of swirling trade rumors as Aiyuk looks for a contract extension.
“Obviously, as a former teammate, or teammate of his in general, or any teammate that you have, you love and respect them and want the best for them,” McCaffrey said.

Aiyuk has been seen periodically on the field during training camp but not in pads, as coach Kyle Shanahan was seen emotionally hugging him earlier in August.
Many speculated that this was a goodbye hug, although Shanahan threw cold water on that.
“It’s usually how we greet each other, bro hug,” Shanahan told reporters.
Aiyuk could still remain with the 49ers, but it seems there’s momentum growing for a potential deal with the Browns or Steelers.
The sides are still working on compensation, both in the form of money for Aiyuk and assets to satisfy the 49ers.
The Patriots appeared to be one of the teams who were able to meet the 49ers’ requests but they have since removed themselves from the Aiyuk sweepstakes.
The Steelers have reengaged with the 49ers in recent days, and the Browns have been interested in the star receiver since the beginning, potentially sending Amari Cooper in return.
Aiyuk is expected to sign a massive contract extension when the trade is completed and hopes to be among the league’s highest paid non-quarterbacks.
