Zac Efron‘s “minor swimming incident” in Ibiza appears to have been caused by a dive gone wrong, according to a new report.

The actor, 36, was hospitalized on Friday, August 2, after an early morning swim with friends in the pool at the villa where he was staying.

Described at the time only as a “swimming incident,” TMZ now claims that Efron hit the bottom of the pool and ingested “a large amount of water into his lungs.”

The outlet said that Efron showed signs of distress and was helped out of the pool by two individuals who worked as onsite security at the villa. Efron was transported to a local hospital as a “precautionary measure.”

The “High School Musical” star reportedly got an x-ray that revealed there was no longer any water in his lungs.

Despite being allegedly cleared for release only a couple hours after he was admitted, the actor stayed for some time longer to avoid getting photographed by paparazzi who caught word of his hospitalization and subsequently descended upon the hospital.

Efron’s rep previously confirmed to People that he was released from a local hospital on Saturday morning.

The “Down to Earth” host assured concerned fans that he was doing well in a post on Sunday, August 4, just one day after the incident. Posting a photo on his Instagram story, Efron showed himself getting in a shirtless workout in a swimsuit and lifting weights while laying on a pink exercise ball.

“Happy and healthy,” he wrote over the snap. “Thanks for the well wishes.”

Efron also appeared in a selfie taken that same day by his friend Caleb Davidge, who appears to have been on vacation with the star. Davidge geotagged Ibiza, Spain, and added two weightlifter emojis to the snap.

According to TMZ, Efron went out for dinner in Ibiza on Sunday night before flying back to the United States on Monday, August 5.

The Post has reached out to Efron’s rep for comment.

Just days before his “minor swimming incident,” Efron was photographed on the stage during DJ Martin Garrix’s show at the Ushuaïa Ibiza Beach Hotel.

He was also spotted at the 2024 Paris Olympics opening ceremony on July 26.

Feeling the Olympic spirit, Efron congratulated Team USA Gymnast Simon Biles on his Instagram story after USA Gymnastics took home the team gold medal.
